Acknowledgements
Hi My name is Debbie
I am the artist who ran the workshops for the mural and
installed the mural with the help of some wonderful volunteers.
This is a place to acknowledge the many people involved with
making it happen
·
First of all I acknowledge the Wurundjeri Elders
and Charley Woolmore, who worked with me on the idea of representing Wurundjeri
History in Pictorial form. This is very important because it means that people
and children can clearly see and then imagine, the past 40,000 years of
Indigenous habitation of this area and keep this heritage in their minds.
Thankyou for taking a risk and working with someone that you
didn’t know.
Thankyou to Aunty Doreen, Aunty Alice, Colin and Charley. I
fell very honoured to have worked with you on this.

We need to acknowledge Chris, from the Deer Park
Pharmacy who first thought of the idea of having artwork in this arcade. He has
been speaking with Brimbank Council for three years and look what he’s got. He
has a mural by the B Crew in the first part of the arcade and now he has this
treasure made by 640 local people. Its your vision Chris, that brings us here
today.

We need to thank Brimbank Council for coming to
the party with finances and their community engagement team who organised the
mural and also the opening event.
Brimbank Council funded the project, which
paid for the materials, firing. Most of the workshops, preparation and
installation. Other resources were provided by Chris of Deer Park Pharmacy,
some of the schools and Volunteer time provided by Gallery Sunshine Everywhere
Artists.
Brimbank
Council have set a great example for other councils, by putting money into
community participation and giving locals the chance to be involved in their
community in very meaningful ways. This mural is an example of that type of
opportunity.

Wambui Thiramu was the Brimbank Council
Community engagement officer who worked alongside the mural process to ensure
that everything was going to plan. Wambui also attended some of the workshops and
installation sessions and made a couple of things that went into the mural!
Stats
about the mural
The mural involved over fourteen kiln
firings. These firings were done in kilns at Sunbury Boilerhouse Community Arts
Centre, The huntclub and Deer Park North Primary School
The weight of the fired artworks is about 160 kg, which is actually the weight of
two heavy teenage boys hanging spreadeagled along the wall, if you can imagine
them there, but is a huge weight to be physically loaded in and out of kilns
twice, and carted around in crates.
99% of the tiles in this mural have been
saved from landfill. They are part of a large collection of tiles that I have
that people give to me as leftovers. It was wonderful to put them to use.
The mural involved at least twenty days of
volunteer work from myself and other community members. But this doesn’t take
into account the voluntary contributions of the artists involved ( children and
adults). Most participants volunteered between 1 – 2 hours of their time which
would mean that another 960 hours were also donated to the mural, equal to
about another 140 days.
The schools

Frances Steffanoni from St Peter Chanel, was the
first to respond to my emails and phone calls and say yes, she was very excited
about the project. Her warmth and enthusiasm helped me get started on the long
road which was this mural. With Frances and her students we made houses, fish,
trees and plants.

Fleur Sadlier of Deer Park North Primary School,
was also very enthusiastic about the project, and did extra work towards the
mural without my assistance. She wanted every child in her school to have an
artwork in the mural and so she continued the clay workshops in other classes
and also did her own firings with a manual kiln. I want to thank you Fleur for
putting this effort into creating the opportunity for all of your students to
be in the mural.
Deer park North Students made the
self-portraits which represent the current inhabitants of Deer Park. They also
made fish and houses.

Deer Park West had to alter their timetable to
accommodate the workshops and I would like to thank the various staff who
worked with me.
And They are bringing all of the years 5 and
6 children over today to look at their work in the mural. These children made
the animals that live or lived along Kororoit Creek.

The Huntclub community arts centre hosted three
workshops for the mural and the wonderful receptionists managed the bookings
for these. Thankyou to the people who attended these workshops and made tiles
to represent the history of Deer Park.

History is a much contested area and I was able
to consult with seven local historians to sort out what were the important
parts to represent.
